Research Safety

Research Safety at the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

In case of an emergency, dial 911 from any land line phone on campus.

For all lab accidents, notify the Department Chairman and members of the Departmental Safety Committee immediately.  Departmental Safety Committee: Evert Duin (Chair), Ahmed Hamid, Jimmy Mills, Joyce Hung (DIRL), Vesko Ruychev, and Sasith Karunarathna.

Contact the Auburn Department of Risk Management and Safety (RMS) regarding any questions. For more information, go to their website. The RMS official responsible for oversight over laboratory safety is Heath Hardison.

Risk Management has a Laboratory Safety Manual, which establishes general safety rules.  Rules for disposal of hazardous waste are also described in this manual.  A full description is given in the Hazardous Waste Management Guide, and for general information see the Hazardous Waste Disposal document.

The NRC publication "Prudent Practices in the Laboratory" is also an excellent resource.

SAFETY TRAINING

Before starting work in a research lab, all researchers must complete Lab Safety Training, Managing Regulated Waste Training, and Biosafety Training (where applicable). Additional safety training courses are available on the BioRAFT website. Document your training on the Safety Training Documentation Form. To start the training process, follow these links:
