Get to Know Steven Dixon

What is your favorite part of your job? 

My role as a videographer at COSAM allows me to embrace my creativity, pursue my lifelong passion for video production, and contribute to the field of science and mathematics. This combination of factors creates a perfect synergy that fuels my love for the job and makes each day a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

I genuinely enjoy the work I do as it brings me immense satisfaction to know that my videos have the potential to inspire and educate others. The ability to combine my passion for video production with the opportunity to make a positive impact within the academic community is truly a dream come true.

What is your education and work experience? 

I grew up in the City of Auburn, Alabama, where my journey in the field of video production and photography began. After completing my high school education, I pursued my passion further by enrolling at Auburn University, where I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. This educational foundation provided me with a strong understanding of effective communication strategies, which proved to be invaluable in my subsequent career.

Following my graduation, I decided to channel my creativity and entrepreneurial spirit by establishing my own video production company. This endeavor allowed me to combine my love and passion for video production and photography with the opportunity to work with a diverse range of clients. From small businesses and non-profit organizations in the local community to large corporations, and law firms, I had the privilege of capturing their unique stories and visions through compelling visual content.

Beyond my professional endeavors, I felt a deep sense of duty to give back to my community. In 2018, I took a leap and ran for a position on the Auburn City Council. Through the support and trust of the community, I was elected and had the honor of serving as a council member for four years, until 2022. This experience allowed me to contribute to the development and growth of my hometown, working collaboratively with fellow council members to address community needs, implement positive change, and make decisions that would enhance the lives of the residents.

Throughout my education and professional journey, my love for video production and photography has remained a constant driving force. I find great joy and fulfillment in capturing the essence of a moment, conveying emotions, and telling stories through the lens. The dynamic nature of the field allows me to continuously learn and grow, exploring new techniques, technologies, and creative approaches to deliver visually captivating content.

What do you like most about Auburn? 

Auburn University holds a special place in my heart, not only because of the exceptional education it provided me, but also because of the unique experiences and connections it fostered. Growing up in the town where the university is located, I had the opportunity to witness the vibrant energy and sense of community that permeates the campus and the surrounding area.

One of the things I love most about Auburn University is the electric atmosphere during football game day weekends. The town comes alive with passionate fans dressed in orange and blue, filling the streets with excitement and anticipation. The camaraderie and shared spirit among the Auburn family create an unforgettable experience that unites both current students and alumni alike. It's a time when everyone comes together to support the team, create lasting memories, and celebrate the university's rich traditions.

What is your favorite hobby or hobbies? 

One of my favorite hobbies is going to OrangeTheory Fitness, where I not only prioritize my physical well-being but also have had the opportunity to make lifelong friends. The energetic and supportive environment of OrangeTheory allows me to challenge myself and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Another significant part of my life is my furry friend, Bane, my beloved Doberman. Together, we explore the neighborhood on walks and frequent various dog parks. Bane loves playing frisbee.

Traveling and exploring new destinations is another passion of mine. Recently, I had the incredible experience of visiting Alaska, where I accomplished my first marathon, embarked on a thrilling heli-hike, and captured breathtaking photographs of wildlife and landscapes. The sense of adventure and the opportunity to immerse myself in different cultures and natural wonders truly enriches my life.

Additionally, I have a deep appreciation for the arts and entertainment. Going to see the latest movies allows me to immerse myself in captivating stories and experience the magic of the big screen. Attending concerts adds an element of excitement and connection as I enjoy live performances and the energy of the crowd.

Why did you pursue the career you are in?

The career path I have pursued as a videographer and photographer is not something I consciously chose, but rather a calling that has been ingrained within me since a young age. Ever since the 7th grade, I discovered my love and passion for video production, and it has been an intrinsic part of who I am ever since.

One of the fundamental reasons I am drawn to this career is the opportunity it provides me to express my creativity. From capturing the perfect shot to editing and crafting visual narratives, every aspect of videography and photography allows me to unleash my imagination and bring my artistic vision to life. It is a profession that taps into my innate eye for attention to detail and fuels my desire to create visually captivating content.

As I have grown in the profession, I’ve realized this career offers me endless opportunities to learn and grow. The uniqueness of each project is another aspect that captivates me. No two projects are alike, as they vary in subject matter, client requirements, and creative vision. This diversity allows me to continuously explore new territories, expand my horizons, and approach each project with a fresh perspective. I thrive on the opportunity to tackle new challenges, adapt to different scenarios, and deliver unique and meaningful visual experiences.

What is your favorite spot to de-stress?

I have a few go-to approaches that never fail to bring me a sense of calm and rejuvenation. One of my top choices is going out for a run or engaging in exercise. The physical activity allows me to release any built-up tension and stress, while the endorphins boost my mood and leave me feeling refreshed.

Spending quality time with loved ones, be it family or friends, is also a significant source of relaxation for me. Engaging in meaningful conversations, sharing laughter, and creating lasting memories with the people I care about helps me unwind and recharge.

However, one of my absolute favorite ways to de-stress is through traveling. Exploring new places, immersing myself in different cultures, and encountering unfamiliar landscapes all have a profound impact on my well-being. The excitement and adventure of discovering new destinations provide a welcome escape from the pressures of everyday life. Each new place I visit brings a sense of wonder and rejuvenation, allowing me to step out of my comfort zone and embrace the world with open arms.

If you could go anywhere for one week, where would you go?

If I had the opportunity to go anywhere for a week, my choice would undoubtedly be Antarctica. Antarctica represents a world unlike any other, with its icy landscapes and incredible wildlife. The opportunity to see penguins waddling along the icy shores, and seeing whales breaching the surface of the frigid waters would be an experience of a lifetime.
