5J20.20 Lamp in Parallel with Inductor

Hook light bulb(12v or120v) in a parallel with a large electromagnet and battery. Open switch to discharge coil through bulb to produce bright flash. 12v bulb will glow before switch opened. 120v bulb will not glow before switch opened.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed. Ask at least 24 hr ahead of time.

Equations: V = Ldi/dt

Safety Issues: Heavy magnet. Large current when open switch (sparks).

5J20.21 Lamps in series with inductor

Hook light bulb(12v) in a series with a large electromagnet and battery. There will be a small but noticable delay after closing switch before bulb glows at full brightness.

Setup Requirements: Assembled as needed. Ask at least 24 hr ahead of time.
