Research and Teaching Interests

Josh Poole, a current PhD student, is a Professional Geologist and Senior Geologist -Exploration/Field Research Geologist for Wellborn Mining working on the Hog Mountain, AL gold deposit. He received his BS in geology from the University of West Georgia in 2012 and his MS from Auburn University in 2015. His previous research work spans from mapping and understanding the mylonitic Bartletts Ferry fault zone of the Pine Mountain window, to barrier island migration off the coast of Georgia. His thesis under Dr. Mark Steltenpohl included the mapping and implications of structures associated with the Brevard fault zone, focusing on the kinematics and timing of faults/shear zones in the Eastern Blue Ridge of Alabama. He also developed a new pedagogical application for stereonets in delineating shear direction. After graduating, he joined the faculty of Columbus State University as a Lecturer of Geology for the 2015-2016 academic year, teaching introductory, major-level, and graduate-level geology courses, and was the Physical Geology Lab coordinator. In 2016 he joined Wellborn Mining. His dissertation under Dr. Laura Bilenker aims to establish structural, geochemical, and/or geophysical relationships of gold occurrences in the quartz-vein-hosted, orogenic Hog Mountain gold deposit. In his ever-dwindling free time, Josh is a crafter and handyman; outdoorsman; Certified Personal Trainer (CPT – NASM); he and his wife own/operate the Celtic Traditions School of Irish Dance; and all while also squeezing in time to travel the world. War Damn Geology!
