COSAM Staff Spotlight - Julian Oliver
Julian Oliver works in the Office of Inclusion, Equity and Diversity. He works on an array of projects including representing COSAM to current and prospective students. Learn more about him in this COSAM Staff Spotlight:
Q: What year did you start at COSAM?
A: I officially got my University ID on February 22, 2019, which happens to be the same date as my mother’s birthday
Q: What is your favorite part of your job?
A: Working with the grad students who are a diverse group, and that makes it never boring.
Definitely building relationships with my students and being able to be a part of their college experience. In this position, I feel that I am able to bring what students in the past have labeled the intangibles.
Q: What is the best advice you have ever received at COSAM and from whom?
A: Will Blakeley told me to do not ever Uber to campus on football game days, the surcharge will be through the sunroof. Take the University Transit instead.
Q: Where are you originally from?
A: I am from Cincinnati, Ohio.
Q: What three words best describe you?
A: Eclectic. Driven. Humble.
Q: What are your hobbies?
A: In my free time I like to play basketball with my STEM Summer Bridge students at the Auburn Campus Rec. I also enjoy roller skating at the infamous Cascade Skating Rink in Atlanta.
Q: What is the one thing you do when no one is around?
A: Take post-workday naps. They are important for a healthy lifestyle.
Q: What is your favorite place on campus?
A: I would probably have to say my office. Debatable, but I just haven’t found a better place yet.
Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Food from Chipotle. I could eat literally it every day of the week, but the way my budget is set up I need to slow it down.
Q: What is your dream travel destination?
A: I would like to visit a country in Africa one day.
Q: What is your most memorable experience at COSAM?
A: My first STEM Summer Bridge experience. No matter how many students I meet during my time here, that cohort of students will always be my first, therefore they’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
Q: If you could trade places with anyone at COSAM for just one day, who would it be and why?
A: Any one of my students just so I can go back to see what it feels like to have a meal plan and not pay bills again. I can go without the homework and exams though!
