Message from Dean Giordano – June 2021
To all COSAM Faculty, Staff, and Students,
While it has only been a few weeks since the finish of the Spring semester, we are already preparing for the Fall. One important event planned for August is a half-day training session to help new COSAM faculty improve their skills to become better mentors.
Mentoring is an essential skillset to help us prepare students that work in our research labs and to help students be successful in our classrooms.
A thoughtful and intentional approach to mentoring also helps all of us as scientists, professionals and supervisors.
In this workshop, led by joyce gossom, participants will have the opportunity to learn about different approaches to mentoring and consider real-life mentoring situations. She will share mentoring guidelines and engage participants to create a list of changes to make and ways to measure mentoring success.
Attendees will learn to analyze and evaluate work examples that occur throughout the year between mentors and graduate students. We have all been in difficult situations like these and this training will help faculty navigate these conversations.
During this training, joyce will also help faculty identify helpful ways to handle situations where conflict arises.
Mentoring can encourage the next generation of scientists and mathematicians to pursue a career in STEM today. One of the most satisfying aspect of mentoring is that can also develop into lifelong friendships.
Mentoring is important and it helped guide me into my career in academia. I am proud that we are holding sessions like this one to help improve mentoring skills and showing our students that we sincerely care about the quality of mentoring we offer.
Thanks,
Nick Giordano
